Font license pricing compared before you sign

A font license is priced by what it meters, so the sticker price is the smallest number you will see. Here is how per-font, subscription and enterprise pricing grow with use.

Prices and terms read: 19 October 2026
Bottom line up front
  • There is no single price for a font. On one live MyFonts family, the entry tier is $32.10 for Desktop and $481.50 a year for an app, and every use is its own license.
  • Three pricing models: per-font licenses (pay per use, once), subscription libraries (Envato Core is $16.50 a month billed annually) and enterprise agreements (Monotype Fonts publishes no price).
  • Read the meter before the price. Users, domains, pageviews, impressions, titles and headcount are what move a font bill, and volume tiers fall steeply per unit.

What does a font license cost?

  1. Name the uses. Video, website, ads, ebooks and apps are separate licenses with separate prices; a font used in all five costs five times over.
  2. Find each use's meter. Desktop counts users, Webfonts count monthly pageviews on one domain, ads count impressions, ebooks count titles, apps count titles per year.
  3. Price the tier you will reach, not the entry tier. The entry price is the smallest number on the listing.
  4. Compare with a year of a subscription. Envato Core costs $198 a year billed annually and covers fonts plus stock assets; per-font licenses cost once per use.
  5. Check what survives cancellation, client work and broadcast with the checklist at the end of this page.

How this was compiled. Every price is a published figure tied to a named listing or plan and read on 19 October 2026: the MyFonts VideoTech listing, Envato pricing, Adobe Creative Cloud plans and the YouWorkForThem licensing page. License tiers are quoted, not paraphrased. No license was purchased for this article, and it is not legal advice.

What are the three ways fonts are priced?

Font pricing comes in three models, and each moves the risk to a different place. A per-font license is bought once for a stated use; a subscription rents a library for as long as you pay; an enterprise agreement covers a whole organization under one negotiated contract.

The per-font model is cheapest when your uses are few and stable. YouWorkForThem states the model in one line: "Buy once, own it outright, use it indefinitely," with "no annual fees". The subscription model is cheapest when you need many fonts and other assets at once. The enterprise model exists for legal and procurement teams: Monotype Fonts sells "a single, transparent agreement that covers your entire organization" and offers a demo rather than a price.

Which metering units change the bill?

The meter, not the font, sets the bill. On the MyFonts listing we priced, seven licenses use six different meters, and each scales differently.

Two readings matter for a buyer. First, volume tiers are discounted per unit: the 200-user Desktop tier works out to about $11.24 a seat against $32.10 for one. Second, the meter you outgrow forces a repurchase. MyFonts' FAQ says that when a site passes its monthly pageview tier "you will need to buy the webfont package again for a higher tier," so a growing site re-buys.

How does one font add up across uses?

One font used everywhere costs one license per use. A small brand that sets its video titles, website, ads, an ebook and an app in the same family pays five licenses, and the app line dominates the bill.

Mechanism · how the bill stacksOne font, five uses, five licenses: $32.10 becomes $642.00
Waterfall: licensing one font family for five uses costs $642.00, and the app license is three quarters of it. Desktop for video titles $32.10, Webfonts for a website at 10,000 pageviews a month $32.10, Digital Ad/Email for 1,000,000 impressions $32.10, Electronic Doc for one ebook $64.20, and App for one app for one year $481.50, total $642.00. Entry tiers for the VideoTech family on MyFonts, read 19 October 2026. Bars are drawn to scale. Desktopvideo titles, 1 user+$32.10 Webfontswebsite, 10,000 pageviews a month+$32.10 Digital Ad/Emailads, 1,000,000 impressions+$32.10 Electronic Docone ebook+$64.20 Appone app, for one year+$481.50 First-year bill$642.00
  • Same $32.10 entry tier
  • Per title
  • Per title, renews yearly
Each step is a separate MyFonts license for the same 8-style family (VideoTech by The Northern Block), at its entry tier, read from the listing on 19 October 2026. To scale: the App license is 75 percent of the first-year bill, and it is the only line that comes back in year two.

The waterfall is the reason "how much is this font" has no single answer. The same $32.10 family is $32.10 for a YouTube channel and $642.00 in its first year for a brand that also ships an app. Our MyFonts licensing explainer walks each of those licenses and the clauses behind them.

What do published font prices look like in October 2026?

Few font sellers publish a comparable price, and the ones that do price different things. This table lists every figure we could read on the vendor's own page on 19 October 2026, with what the figure buys.

Twelve months at each plan's published monthly figure, read 19 October 2026; Adobe's first-three-months promotion excluded. Monotype Fonts is not drawn because it publishes no price. A subscription covers a library; a per-font license covers one family, so compare by how many fonts and uses you need.

Creative Market and Fontspring both sell per-font licenses priced listing by listing; we did not read a comparable listing price for either on 19 October 2026 (Fontspring's license page refused our crawler), so no figure is quoted. Creative Market's license page does state its tiers: Commercial covers "up to 5,000 end products for sale" with broadcast and streaming up to 500,000 lifetime viewers, and Extended Commercial "up to 250,000 end products for sale" with unlimited lifetime viewers.

What do free fonts cost, and what do their licenses allow?

Free fonts cost nothing and can still carry rules. The SIL Open Font License FAQ lists "video titling" among uses for which "No additional license or permission is required," and its one firm limit is that the font cannot be sold by itself. Google Fonts publishes its library under open licenses of this kind, which our Google Fonts guide covers in full.

"Free" on a font store is a price, not a license. Fontshare presents itself as "Quality Fonts. Free." Its license page did not render its terms to our crawler on 19 October 2026, so read the license file shipped with each download before using one commercially. A download labelled "free for personal use" is the classic trap: it excludes the monetized work most creators do.

What should you check before you sign a font license?

Five clauses decide whether a cheap license stays cheap. Each one below is quoted from a vendor's own terms read on 19 October 2026, and the checklist copies straight into a purchase note.

Font license checklist, before you sign

[ ] USES: list every use (video, website, ads, ebook, app, server). Each is a separate license. [ ] METER: for each use, the count you will reach this year (users, pageviews/month, impressions, titles, cores, employees). [ ] PEOPLE: everyone who will ever use the font. MyFonts Desktop users are "cumulative, not concurrent". [ ] CLIENTS and FREELANCERS: Envato fonts "can only ever be used by you, the Subscriber", not a client. MyFonts Company Desktop excludes contractors and agencies. [ ] CLOUD TOOLS: MyFonts permits no upload to Canva or other cloud-hosted platforms. Check any browser editor you plan to use. [ ] CANCELLATION: Envato keeps completed projects licensed after you cancel, but "you must uninstall" the font. Know your subscription's equivalent. [ ] BROADCAST: Creative Market Commercial caps broadcast at 500,000 lifetime viewers. Check your store's cap or tier. [ ] RENEWALS: MyFonts App licenses run "for one year". Budget year two. [ ] REFUNDS: MyFonts, 7 days with the invoice number. Envato: "We do not refund canceled subscriptions." [ ] PRICE THE TIER YOU WILL REACH, then compare with a year of Envato Core ($198) or Adobe Creative Cloud Pro ($839.88).

Frequently asked questions

How much does a font license cost?

It depends on the use, not the font. On one live MyFonts family read on 19 October 2026, the entry tiers were $32.10 for Desktop, Webfonts and Digital Ad/Email, $64.20 for one ebook, $321.00 for a server core and $481.50 for one app for one year.

Is a font subscription cheaper than buying fonts?

Only if you use many fonts or other assets. Envato Core costs $16.50 a month billed annually, $198 a year, against $32.10 once for one MyFonts family on a Desktop license. For one stable look, buying is cheaper; for weekly changes, a subscription is.

Why do webfont licenses get cheaper per pageview?

Volume tiers are discounted. On the MyFonts family we priced, 10,000 pageviews a month cost $32.10 ($3.21 per thousand) and 2,000,000 cost $706.20 (about $0.35 per thousand), 22 times the price for 200 times the traffic.

Does Monotype publish prices for Monotype Fonts?

No. Monotype Fonts is sold as one agreement covering an organization, with 400,000+ fonts from 5,000+ foundries, and the page offers a demo instead of a price.

Are free fonts safe for commercial video?

Fonts under the SIL Open Font License are: its FAQ lists video titling among uses that need no additional license. A font marked "free for personal use" is not, and a free font store can still attach its own license, so read the license file.

What happens to my font license if I cancel a subscription?

It depends on the vendor. Envato says completed projects keep their license after cancellation, but you must uninstall fonts and cannot start new projects with them. Read your subscription's equivalent clause before you rely on it.
