Who designed the most-used fonts on the web?

Across the 150 most-used Google Fonts families there are 149 credited names. 35 of them are credited on two or more families and between them account for 95 of the 150. The most-credited single name is Google at 11 families. 114 names appear exactly once.

Is web typography concentrated in a few hands?

Partly, and it depends where you look. Repeat names are behind 90% of the ten most-used families and 63% of all 150. Families at the head of the corpus are far more likely to involve a name with other credits, though the tiers inside the head do not order cleanly. And 55 of the 150 families were made entirely by names credited nowhere else, so the long tail is real.

Are these designers or companies?

Both, and the source data does not separate them. The credit field mixes individuals such as Rasmus Andersson with organisations such as Google, ParaType and Colophon Foundry. Of the 35 repeat names on this page, 9 publish as an organisation and 26 as a person, by our reading. That classification is ours and it is shown per row so you can disagree with any of it.

Do fonts with more designers become more popular?

We checked and we are not claiming it. Median popularity rank runs 54, 88, 62, 33 for families with 1, 2, 3, 4+ credited names. The pattern is not monotonic and the largest-team bucket holds only 7 families, which is too few to read anything into.

The Google Fonts metadata API, the same source behind our licence census, read on 2026-08-27. Popularity rank is Google's own ordering. Every family named here links to its own page on this site with its licence terms.

35 Names Made 95 of the 150 Most-Used Typefaces

We already read the licence on all 150 of the most-used Google Fonts families. This reads the credits. There are 149 credited names across the 150. 35 of them are credited on two or more families, and between them they account for 95 of the 150.

The other 114 names appear exactly once. Both halves of that sentence are true, and most writing about web typography only tells you one of them.

The names behind the most families

Every typeface below is set in itself. That is not decoration: a typeface is the only kind of entity that can identify itself completely, and a list of names in body text tells you nothing about what any of them actually made.

Across all 150 the figure is 63%. Among the most-used families it runs between 80% and 90%. It is not a smooth gradient: the top 25 sits at 80%, below the top 50 at 84%. The gap that holds is between the head of the corpus and the whole of it, not an ordering within the head.

One thing we checked and are not claiming

It would be a neat result if families designed by larger teams became more popular. We tested it. Median popularity rank by number of credited names runs 54 for 1, 88 for 2, 62 for 3, 33 for 4+. The pattern is not monotonic, the largest-team bucket contains only 7 families, and a lower median in a bucket that small is what noise looks like.

We are reporting it because the alternative is running the test, disliking the answer, and quietly writing a different sentence.

What this does not show

"Designer" is the wrong unitThe credit field mixes individuals with studios and companies. Of the 35 repeat names, 9 are organisations by our reading, and that classification is ours, shown per row so you can disagree with it.

Credit is not authorshipA name in the metadata may have drawn every glyph, extended a family to a new script, or maintained it. The field does not distinguish those, and this page does not either.

150 families, not all of typeThis is the most-used slice of one library. Commercial foundries, whose work sits behind most film and broadcast typography, are absent from it entirely.

Usage rank is Google'sPopularity ordering comes from the same metadata. It measures requests through Google Fonts, not installs, not use in video, and not preference.

Bottom line

The 150 typefaces most of the web is set in were made by 149 names, 35 of whom you meet more than once. Those 35 account for 95 families and 90% of the top ten.

The rest is a long tail of 114 names with one credit each, holding 55 families outright. Web typography is neither the small guild nor the open field it gets described as, and the credits say so plainly if you read them.
