The serif axis that matters, and the two rows that break the table

There are twenty six serif families in the 150 most-used Google Fonts. Five of them carry an optical size axis, which is the axis that matters most in this category and the one almost nobody checks for. Nineteen are variable fonts, seven are static, and five ship no italic at all.

Two rows also quietly break the comparison. Noto Serif SC and Noto Serif JP are CJK families carrying tens of thousands of glyphs, at roughly 24MB and 13MB against a category median under 300KB. Reading the size column without noticing that leads to the wrong conclusion about every other family in it.

What an optical size axis actually does

A serif drawn for body text and the same serif drawn for a headline are not the same drawing. At 12pt a face needs open counters, sturdy serifs and generous spacing to survive being small. At 72pt those same features look clumsy, and what the eye wants instead is finer hairlines, sharper serifs and tighter spacing. For centuries this was solved by cutting separate sizes of the same face, and the knowledge was largely set aside when one scalable outline became the norm.

An optical size axis restores it. The designer draws both ends and everything between, and the renderer picks the right drawing for the size being set. Five families here expose one: Merriweather, Roboto Serif, Literata, Playfair and Fraunces.

The practical consequence is specific. A serif without an optical size axis is a compromise tuned for one size range, and using it far outside that range is where headlines end up looking slightly muddy or body text ends up looking spindly. Most people diagnose that as the wrong typeface. Often it is the right typeface at the wrong size, with no mechanism to adapt.

The two rows that break the size column

File sizes in this category run from 36KB to roughly 24,500KB. That is a spread of nearly seven hundred to one, and it is entirely the work of two rows.

Noto Serif SC covers Simplified Chinese and Noto Serif JP covers Japanese. A Latin family needs a few hundred glyphs. A CJK family needs tens of thousands, and the file size follows directly. Neither is bloated; they are doing a completely different job from everything around them.

This matters because a reader scanning the size column will calibrate against the largest number they see. Against 24MB, Merriweather at 4.5MB looks reasonable and Arvo at 36KB looks impossibly light. Against the twenty four Latin families alone, the median is under 300KB and Merriweather is one of the heaviest things in the category. Both readings come from the same column. The lesson is not really about fonts: a table containing two rows drawn from a different population will mislead about every other row in it unless the table says so out loud.

One family here is carrying dead languages

Cardo covers Gothic, Hebrew, Old Italic and Runic, and it is the only family in this category covering any of them. It also covers Greek and extended Greek, which together give it the widest script coverage in the set.

That is not a general-purpose feature and it is not an accident. Cardo was drawn for classicists, medievalists and biblical scholars, who need to set Hebrew alongside Greek alongside a runic inscription in a single paragraph, and who have historically had to assemble that from three or four separate fonts with mismatched proportions.

For anyone not doing that work none of this matters, and Cardo is simply an unremarkable static serif with two weights. For anyone who is, it is close to the only option in the corpus. It is the clearest case in this category of a family whose entire value sits in a field most people never look at.

The most recognisable serifs here are the least distinguishable

This page profiles the families the data can actually separate, and three of the best-known serifs in the set do not qualify. Crimson Pro, Cormorant Garamond and Libre Baskerville each carry zero facts that are true of them and false of most of their siblings. Playfair Display, at rank 27 one of the most-used serifs on the web, carries one.

That is not a criticism of any of them, and it is worth stating plainly because the omission would otherwise read as a judgement. Being a well-drawn, conventionally specified, widely useful book serif is exactly the thing that does not show up in an axis list. These families are popular because the drawing is good, and the drawing is the one property this page has deliberately refused to invent claims about.

It cuts the other way too. Fraunces has more measured facts than almost anything here, including two axes nobody else exposes, and it is the lowest-ranked family in the set at 106. Distinctiveness in metadata and usefulness in practice are different quantities, and this page only measures the first.

Five families ship no italic

Roboto Slab, Cinzel, Prata, Noto Serif SC and Noto Serif JP ship no italic styles at all.

For a serif this is a heavier constraint than it is for a sans, because the italic is doing more work. Serif italics are not slanted romans; they are a genuinely different drawing descended from a different hand, and in running text they carry emphasis, titles, foreign phrases and citations. A serif without one is missing a register that serif-set prose actively uses.

For the two CJK families the absence is expected, since the concept does not transfer. For Roboto Slab, Cinzel and Prata it is a real limitation worth knowing before committing a body-text setting to any of them.

The 19 the data actually distinguishes

The table above holds all 26 families in the category, and every one of them links to its own page. The 19 below are the ones carrying at least two measured facts that are true of them and false of most of their siblings. The remainder are not worse typefaces. They are families the metadata cannot separate, and inventing a distinction for each of them would be the opposite of useful.

Merriweather

The highest-ranked serif in the set at 14, and one of five here with an optical size axis, which it pairs with a width axis. That combination is why it holds up across a range of sizes better than most of its neighbours. At roughly 4.5MB it is the heaviest Latin family in the category by a wide margin, which is what carrying three axes across seven weights and matched italics costs. Noto Serif

It is the most complete system in the category and it is built to be exactly that: the Noto project exists to cover every script, and this is its serif. If one serif has to serve a multilingual project, the argument for looking here first is strong.

Very few families in the whole corpus expose it.

Twenty six. Serif is the second-largest of the five categories in that set, behind Sans Serif at 95 and ahead of Display at 13, Handwriting at 8 and Monospace at 7. The highest-ranked serif is Merriweather at 14.

Which serif fonts have an optical size axis?
